Does A Web Developer Needs To Know Only The Back-end Of The Project?

If I am an asp.net developer or a PHP developer do I need to know how to build a pages? Or I just need to know the basics of html& css assuming I will mostly work to the back-end of the project(connecting database to site etc..) than building the front-end part(html. css, js etc..)

  1. It depends on the team you’ll be working with. I have worked in companies which labeled by as “Software & Web Developer” however, I was responsible for coding the User Interface of the application in addition to the libraries used to define Business Logic.
You will need to know basics of HTML and CSS since you will need to integrate the HTML given to you by HTML developers into your application.
It is very very probable that you will need to know how to deal with a RDBMS too for example MS Sql Server or MySql. Rarely I have seen a web developer that doesn’t have at least some sort of expertise in the DBMS which his application uses to store its data.
To cut a long story short, the core of your job will rotate around coding the server side code of your application, however you will also spend some time coding with HTML, CSS, Javascript. You will also spend LOTS of time around your DBMS.
    Hope this helps.

  2. It depends on the project, the team, your role.
According to what you said, you need not know all that stuff if you spend all day in the back-end stuff.
But there is nothing wrong in knowing about CSS and HTML. Learn it if you can.

  4. I wouldn’t hire you if you only have one skill.

  5. As with many jobs, the more you know, the more marketable you are. Knowing the front-end will help you communicate better with the designers. You really should know at least the basics of the front-end part not necessarily to code it yourself, but to be able to communicate better with the rest of your team.
