This is kind of a long answer, but your question is very important.
Writing Titles-
I’m assuming you are talking about the “title tag” and not the header of your article? To clarify a “title tag” in HTML looks like this:
.
The result of a
I know it seems a bit picky, but these are two different elements on a web page. These are also two of the most IMPORTANT search engine optimization elements that will effect your ranking in the search engines for a keyword phrase; so either way (
) your question is great! tag- tag IS VERY POWERFUL!
Anyway, lets cover the
There are a lot of factors to getting a website or webpage ranked for a keyword, but if you are only going to optimize ONE page element, the
So this is how to optimize (or write) a title tag:
1. Every page should have a unique title tag that targets the page content. With that in mind, build your web page according to a theme or category. Your title tag will cover that theme.
2. In the title tag. Use short keywords, or keyword phrases that only include words (or keyword phrases) that people are searching for.
3. Resist using too many extemporaneous words. Limit words like and, or, the …etc. Try to put your more important words at the beginning of the title.
4. Do NOT repeat words. Use clear and concise title tags, DO NOT get tricky.
5. If you want to put your website name in a title tag, put it at the end, separating the keyword phrase from the website name by using a dash or pipe.
6. In some situations, you can also use short sentences that include your keyword phrase. Just keep the above suggestions in mind.
7. In some situations, you may use your title tag to optimize for “long tailed” keyword phrases that are not competitive. However, I only mention this for consideration. It might be a little more advanced SEO than your question is asking?
Next question-
The use of singular vers plural would be answered on a case by case bases. You would do some keyword research to determine what version people are searching for more.
And the next question-
Using a single word or 2 words. My general answer is, I would use a keyword phrase.
Ok, the last question you have asked is regarding the “description”. This is another VERY important tag in getting your page ranked.
1. Write your descriptions using GOOD grammar and sentence structure. Write complete sentences!
2. Use complete sentences. –I wanted to repeat this!!
3. Use two short sentences that include your keyword phrase(s) and try to add the phrases toward the beginning of your description.
4. Keep your sentences natural. Again, good sentence structure and grammar only.
Wheeeww — I tried to cram a lot of search engine optimization tactics into a short answer. Again, GREAT QUESTION!
Hope it helps.

There’s no hard and fast rule for optimizing your titles. Just be as descriptive as possible (although I think there is a character limit on what search engines use ~80? Do a search and count them.. but you can still go over).
Make sure each title is relevant to its own page (don’t use the same title for every single page). Don’t just list out keywords in your title.
