*i’m asking again cuz I accidentally closed this question to new answers prematurely - i’m new to yahoo answers…*
I am a graphic designer and took a basic photography class in school. After that I am going at it on my own but there is so much more to learn like lighting, pro gear, other formats, studio work, working with models, compositions and knowing the aesthetics of what is considered a great shot. Most colleges and universities only offer introductory classes or entire programs that require a formal application. I just want to find an open enrollment sort of deal short of actual apprenticeships. And although I should just go out there and just shoot, my work is offering to pay for my job-related classes… Photoshop and Flash classes are so boring.

Do Most Profesional Web Developers Have Qualifications In This Area, Or Are They Self-taught?
I’ve read that it is close to %50 both ways.
I am self taught and mostly know only self taught programmers and designers.
I think the real limitation is if you want to work for a huge company, they will really only hire you on if a degree is in play.
Any degree is better than none!
But of course there are some real exceptions for the crazy talented and gifted. Some can take the risk and get away with it.

What Should An Experienced Web Developer Expect To Make In The Los Angeles/beverly Hills Area?
I current make a salary in the mid $50s in a much cheaper region of the US (mid-south). I am trying to decide how to approach the “expected salary range” question for an upcoming job interview with a very predominant LA based software company. I have several years of experience and I am trying to determine what the best way to calculate cost of living differences is. Can I trust tools like Salary.com to tell me what the equivalent of my salary would be in the LA area? How accurate is that information? Is there something better you recommend out there?

You may need to apply to become an apprentice painter first presuming that there is such a program. There are apprenticeship programs for plumbers, pipefitters and welders.
