What Is A Good Lens For Indoor Low Light Photography?

I am having trouble finding a good lens for indoor concert photography that isn’t too expensive. I have a Canon Rebel XT. The Canon EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS lens is so sweet, but if I were going to spend over $1000 on a lens it would be in the L series. What is a good third party lens comparable to this one?

There’s A Really Good Finnish Painter Who Handles Light Really Well. Any Ideas On His Name?

This artist may or may not still be alive; I don’t know. He was quite popular in Finland a while back. He handles light — both its presence and its absence — incredibly well. He may have been painting before photography was considered art. His paintings look almost like photos. Any info would be helpful. Thanks!
