It started when I read this book, “True Stories from Nature”, and was impressed by a story about boa constrictor, which swallows their prey whole, without chewing it, and being unable to move for months after this, digesting it. I pondered deeply, then, over the adventures of the jungle, and then produced my first drawing. I showed it to grown-ups and asked if it scared them, but they were like: “Frighten? Why should any one be frightened by a hat?” My drawing was not a picture of a hat. It was a picture of a boa constrictor digesting an elephant. But since the grown-ups were not able to understand it, I made another drawing: I drew the inside of a boa constrictor, so that the grown-ups could see it clearly. This time, the grown-ups advised me to stop drawing boa-constrictors from inside and from outside and devote myself instead to geography, history, arithmetic, and grammar. I am really discouraged. I’d love to be a painter, but everybody is against me. Should I give it another try, or should I stop thinking about it? What should I do?
